Hyssopus officinalis – Common Hyssop

This delightful aromatic perennial brings bright blue-violet flower spikes and fragrant foliage to herb gardens and perennial beds from summer into fall. A member of the mint family native to southern and eastern Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia, common hyssop forms an attractive, upright, semi-evergreen plant that welcomes butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Its fresh leaves and flowers can be used as culinary seasoning, with the foliage adding distinctive flavor to soups, stews, and sauces; dried leaves and flowers are also useful in potpourri. Grow in sun to light shade with well-drained soil. Established plants tolerate some drought, though moderate water supports their best appearance. A spring trim helps maintain a bushy, well-shaped habit.
