A striking low-growing groundcover from New Zealand, Acaena inermis Purpurea forms a dense, spreading mat of finely divided, bronzy-purple foliage that stays attractive year-round. In summer it produces small, globe-shaped burr heads in deep reddish-purple that add textural interest and a jewel-like quality to the garden. It's an excellent choice for filling gaps between stepping stones, spilling over rock walls, or carpeting sunny slopes — and it handles foot traffic and dry conditions with ease once established.
