Silene uniflora – Sea Campion (Bladder Campion, Carpet Catchfly, Maiden's Tears)
This lovely semi-evergreen perennial forms a low mat of light green foliage on trailing stems, bringing an airy carpet of white flowers to the garden from spring through summer. The blooms emerge from distinctive inflated calyces, giving sea campion its charming bladder-campion and maiden's-tears names. Native to Europe and northwestern Africa, it is excellent for rock gardens, edging, borders, containers, and small groundcover plantings, where its spreading stems can soften stones and edges. Drought and coastal tolerant, it attracts butterflies and grows well in sun to part shade with well-drained soil and moderate to low watering. Also known horticulturally as Silene vulgaris subsp. maritima.
