Lepechinia fragrans – Fragrant Pitcher Sage
A lovely California-native shrub from the Channel Islands, including Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina, fragrant pitcher sage brings aromatic foliage and soft flower color to sunny, low-water gardens. Large, softly hairy leaves provide attractive texture beneath spikes of pinkish-white to pale lavender flowers in spring and summer. Its pleasantly aromatic foliage has a softer fragrance than the more pungent inland pitcher sage, Lepechinia calycina. With its substantial size, heat and drought tolerance, and deer resistance, this distinctive native makes an excellent screen, habitat shrub, or backdrop in a sunny xeriscape planting.
