Juncus patens – California Gray Rush
A California-native evergreen perennial rush also native to Oregon and Washington, Juncus patens brings lovely architectural texture to moist garden spaces. Thin, upright stems in shades of gray-green to gray-blue form a stiff, distinctive clump, making an excellent accent beside ponds, along borders, or in containers. Its small brown flowers are inconspicuous, allowing the striking foliage and upright form to remain the main attraction. This rhizomatous, grass-like perennial tolerates clay and boggy conditions and offers deer and gopher resistance. Plant in sun to partial shade with moist soil for an attractive, practical addition to a native or waterside planting.
