Dark purple buds open to fragrant lilac-purple flowers, with a generous spring-through-fall display that can extend through much of the year in mild coastal gardens. Selected by Carol Bornstein and introduced by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, this free-flowering, drought-tolerant plant is excellent for sunny borders, butterfly gardens, large containers, groundcover plantings, bedding, and generously sized hanging baskets. Its flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, while its tidy, mounding form brings long-lasting color to low-maintenance landscapes.

Key Features:

Evergreen perennial subshrub; upright, mounding habit

Cedros Island, Baja California selection introduced by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Dark purple buds opening to fragrant lilac-purple flower clusters

Free flowering from spring through fall; potentially longer in mild coastal climates

Drought tolerant once established; accepts occasional summer water

Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds

Excellent for borders, containers, groundcover, bedding, and large hanging baskets

Light-frost tolerant; protect in colder gardens

Growing Details:
Height: 2–3 feet | Spread: 3–4 feet
Exposure: Sun; partial shade inland | Water: Low to moderate
Bloom time: Spring–fall; potentially longer in mild climates | Bloom color: Lilac-purple
USDA Hardiness Zone: 7–10
